"Singer/songwriter/guitarist Echo Wilcox started Ancient Warfare in Savannah, Ga., as a guitar/drum duo in 2009. When she returned to her old Kentucky home, AW became a trio, then grew into the quintet it is today. Driven by Wilcox’s timeless vocals and well-crafted songs, Ancient Warfare’s sound is expansive yet organic, boosted by Rachael Yanarella’s exquisite violin riffs and Tom Hnatow’s pedal steel. The group, which tours frequently and has performed with artists like Richard Buckner and Scout Niblett, is currently working on its first full-length, The Pale Horse, which is set for release on Alias Records later this year." - Mike Breen, CityBeat

Don't be deceived by the energetic, hopscotching riff that propels "Just to Be Like You", the new track from Brooklyn indie-poppers Ski Lodge; its jangly energy almost tricks you into thinking it's a happy song. The tune improves on the springy, upbeat promise of their 2011self-titled EP, but once Andrew Marr's vocals enter the fray (doing his best Morrissey and intoning every vowel with a nasal ennui) things don't seem so sunny. "You were a simple man with a simple life, but you drank yourself into a tomb," he sings. It seems like a classic tale of disappointed son and fuck-up dad, but the song's emotional crux is the realization that the two might not be so different: "Oh, just to be like you," Marr sighs, "Is all I ever wanted to be."
